Yes, Singer is a good sewing machine brand, and it's at its best on heavy fabrics. Its Heavy Duty machines are some of the most-rated sewing machines on Amazon, and their listings back up the name with real specs: metal frames, stronger motors, 1,100 stitches per minute. Where Singer is less competitive is beginner computerized machines and embroidery. Brother usually gives you more there. If you've settled on a Singer, start with the Heavy Duty 4423.

Nearly every Singer best seller is a Heavy Duty machine, and tens of thousands of owners rate them around 4.4 to 4.5 stars. Just as telling is what's missing: no Singer embroidery machine appeared near the top of Amazon's embroidery results.

The Singer to buy

Singer Heavy Duty 4423

Of the three, this has the most complete spec sheet and the most owner ratings of any Singer (21,000+). On thick seams, the two features that make the biggest difference are adjustable presser foot pressure and an extra-high lift. The 4423's listing is the one that confirms both.

Best for leather and vinyl

Singer Heavy Duty 4452 bundle

Buy it for what's in the box. You get a walking foot and a non-stick foot. Leather and vinyl need both, and so do laminates. An extension table for big projects is included too. If you'd buy those anyway, the bundle is the better value.

Singer Heavy Duty 4432

Singer's best-ranked machine on Amazon on October 3, 2026: #5 in Sewing Machines, with nearly 12,000 ratings. Its listing says less than the 4423's, though. If you're choosing between the two on specs alone, the 4423 is easier to justify.

What about the Next Evolution models?

A hand turning the stitch selector dial on a sewing machine
The Heavy Duty line keeps simple dial stitch selection.

Singer's newer Heavy Duty 4511, 4523 and 4552 "Next Evolution" models switch to a DC motor and add speed control. Capping the top speed gives you slow, controlled stitching through thick spots. Their listings also mention drop feed, adjustable needle position and presser foot pressure. The top speed drops a little, to 1,000 stitches per minute against the older models' 1,100.

They differ mainly in stitch count: 11 built-in stitches on the 4511, 23 on the 4523 and 32 on the 4552. Watch the buttonhole if that matters to you. The 4511 has a four-step buttonhole, and the 4523 and 4552 have one-step.

Reading Singer listings: "stitch applications"

Singer usually advertises stitch applications, not built-in stitches, and the two numbers are very different. The 4423 has 23 built-in stitches that Singer counts as 97 applications. The 4452 and 4552 have 32 counted as 110, and the M1500 has 6 counted as 57. An "application" is one way of using a stitch; the same zigzag might finish a seam, sew on appliqué or attach elastic.

Once you know that, it's not misleading. It does make a Singer look like it has far more stitches than a Brother with a similar real count. So compare built-in stitches to built-in stitches, and remember that most sewing uses five or six of them.

Before you buy a Singer

The same model is sold in several colors and bundles, with different accessories, so check exactly which version you're buying. The 4452 bundle, for instance, adds a walking foot, a non-stick foot and an extension table. Check the buttonhole type too: most Heavy Duty models have a one-step buttonhole, but the 4511 Next Evolution lists a four-step one.

Budget for needles, because heavy fabric needs heavy needles. Singer's heavy duty needle pack (90/14 to 110/18) was the best-selling needle pack in our Amazon search, with 4,000+ bought in the past month.

  • Bobbins come in classes. The 4552's listing specifies Class 15, so check your manual before buying spares.
  • If you add a walking foot later, make sure it lists your model as compatible.

The reputation question

An antique black sewing machine with gold decoration on a wooden cabinet
Many people's image of Singer comes from machines like this. Today's line-up is judged on today's specs.

A lot of "is Singer still good?" searches come from people who remember a parent's all-metal vintage machine. Modern Singers have plastic housings around an internal frame, like nearly every home machine made today. The fair test is whether the current model's specs and owner ratings hold up. For the Heavy Duty line, they do. For computerized beginner machines, compare against Brother before you buy; see Brother vs Singer.

So, buy one?

If thick fabric is in your plans, yes. The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 is the Singer we'd buy for denim and canvas, and it handles everyday sewing fine. Make it the 4452 bundle if leather or vinyl is on the list. If what you want is embroidery, or the most features on a small budget, this is where Brother wins.
